Drug Testing Programs Can Increase the Efficiency and Productivity of Your Organization
There are a variety of reasons to test employees for illegal drug use. Many companies screen potential employees as part of their onboarding process. This preventative act, when coupled with on-going random testing may help keep troublemakers out of the workplace. Of course, screening for illegal drugs is always a good follow-up for accidents or if there is some sort of cause for suspicion.
The Impact of Illegal Drug Use
Illegal drug use may be having a much greater impact on your workplace than you realize. The American Council for Drug Education has released these recent statistics:
- More than 70% of substance abusers hold jobs
- 25% of workers, ages 18-34, used drugs in the past year
- 33% of workers know of drug sales in the workplace
- Substance abusers are 10 times more likely to miss work, 5 times more likely to file a worker’s compensation claim, and 33% less productive on the job
Reducing Workplace Accidents and Improving Safety
Drug testing can be an effective way to reduce workplace accidents and improve safety. Following the implementation of drug testing at the Southern Pacific Railroad, accidents resulting in injuries dropped from 2,234 in the year before drug testing was introduced, to just 322 in the first half of the fourth year of the drug-testing program. Annualized, this represents a 71.2 percent decrease in accidents. The Southern Pacific Railroad study is indicative of the impact that drug testing can and does have on accident rates among companies of all sizes, representing virtually every industry.
